A turbocharger is an extraordinary piece of work, about which we would like to tell you something more. Every engine provides a certain power. In an internal combustion engine, this power can be obtained thanks to a combination of fuel, oxygen and the ignition temperature. By changing any of these three elements, the power of the engine can change. If more power is needed, one should have more fuel and oxygen, which leads to a larger cylinder capacity that makes the engine heavier, larger and more expensive. This is not really desirable considering the severe demands of emission, the higher fuel consumption of a larger cylinder capacity and the higher costs in production. A turbocharger can offer you the solution to this problem.
How does a turbocharger work?
Using a turbocharger means adding more air to the engine under pressure. This causes more power (for equal cylinder capacity) and enables the engine to perform better. Even though this all seems extremely complicated, it is based upon simple principles.
In the cylinders, there is a combustion of fuel and oxygen. The exhaust fumes that come from the cylinder are turning up the turbine wheel in the turbocharger. This turbine wheel is linked to a compressor wheel through a shaft, and makes the compressor wheel turn. The rotating compressor wheel is sucking in the air and compresses it. As soon as the inlet valve has been opened, the compressed air is flowing inside the cylinder.
The advantages of a turbocharger in short:
- A turbocharger can provide a large amount of power from a fairly small engine.
- An engine with a turbo has a favorable fuel consumption
- The fuel in an engine with a turbo has a better combustion, which reduces the toxic fumes.
